Paula Pryke has served London as one of its top florists for nearly thirty years; her work is known throughout the world. Today, Pryke runs a booming flower business and heads a floral school. A best-selling author of books on floral design, she has made innumerable television appearances in Britain and the U.S.
Pryke said she finds inspiration in the outdoors. “My floral art finds inspiration in many different forms, but nature is by far the biggest influence and the best teacher.”
Originally a teacher by trade, she began to think about changing careers after her work conditions declined. “It was a difficult environment [in which] to work; the school had a tough reputation,” she said. Resolved to learn as much as she could about the floral industry, she set to work, attending courses and immersing herself in the subject.
She opened her flower shop in Islington in 1988. Today, she also sells flowers online, where her customers can choose flowers that are sent directly from their growers. “The aim is to get the flowers from the flower farmers to you direct with the utmost care and efficiency so that you can get the most enjoyment out of them,” she said.
Pryke began her flower school in 1994 following the publication of her first book. With her background in education, she brings a professional perspective to, and remains very hands-on, in her classes. “I have an enthusiasm for sharing our knowledge,” she explained. “I hope in some small way I might have elevated floral design as a discipline.”
She has been featured in leading magazines and now contributes regularly to Sainsbury’s Magazine and English Garden. Among many awards she has received are Most Brilliant Florist (Evening Standard), Best Florist in London (Tatler) and Ambassador for the Floral Industry (National Farmers Union).
