Pink Clapboards & Honey Locusts: How a Thomasville House Shaped a Career in Design

Gil SchaferGil Schafer III is the principal of G. P. Schafer Architect, PLLC, a New York City-based firm specializing in classical residential architecture. A graduate of Yale School of Architecture in 1988, he is the great-grandson of Howard Melville Hanna, Jr. the original owner of Thomasville’s Melrose Plantation. The firm’s work has been the recipient of major design and preservation awards, including three Palladio Awards for excellence in traditional residential design: in 2002 for a new Greek Revival house in Upstate New York; in 2004 for the renovation of a Greenwich Village apartment in New York City; and most recently in the spring of 2009 for a new house in the HudsonValley. The firm’s work has also been featured on the TV program “This Old House” and has been included in exhibitions an d eight recent books. Prior to establishing his own practice in 2002, Schafer worked for several notable classical residential firms including Ferguson, Shamamian & Rattner Architects in New York City, where he had been an Associate. From 1999-2006 he served as the President and then Chairman of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America, the nation’s leading non-profit dedicated to classicism in architecture and the allied arts.
